Ode to the couches of friends

  • Never a pillow softer
  • than the one on the floor of your office,
  • amongst the whirring breath of computers
  • and memories of shared ideas.
  • And never a blanket warmer
  • than the one on your too-short couch,
  • near the window that hasn’t closed
  • since the night of our Mexican dance.
  • Tea can be as heady
  • as an expensive glass of champagne,
  • and toast as exotic as caviar
  • when we’re at your old kitchen table.
  • The only sights left worth seeing
  • are the changes to the interior décor
  • of the spare room where I’ll be sleeping
  • next time I pass by your way.
  • And every time that I leave
  • you turn out in droves to farewell me
  • and offer me undying support,
  • a place in your home forever
  • and forever a place in your heart.
  • (The only way I could single space it was to dot point it…sorry about that).
